Eero Saarinen developed the Tulip Armchair in the 1950s as part of his research of "organic furniture." Together with the Tulip Chair, Tulip Table and the other furniture that Saarinen developed as part of this collection, the Tulip Armchair represents the peak of his career in which these lasting icons of modern classic furniture were brought to the forefront. This one-legged chair was meant to alleviate one of the designer's great concerns: clutter. Describing his intentions to simplify and clarify structure, he once said: "The undercarriage of chairs and tables in a typical interior makes an ugly, confusing, unrestful world. I wanted to make the chair all one thing again." The Tulip Armchair also marks the culmination of Saarinen's efforts to create a chair molded from a single material (fiberglass), which furthered his design concept of "one piece, one material." The Tulip Armchair design won numerous awards, including the Museum of Modern Art Award in 1969.
Our thorough reproduction of this timeless chair is manufactured applying the highest quality materials and most skilled craftsmanship. The frame is carefully made with fine quality molded fiberglass. Luxurious cotton fabric or top-grain leather upholsters the padded seat cushion. Like the Tulip Chair, this chair also swivels in a 360 degree motion. The Tulip Armchair is available in the traditional glossy white and black colors.
